April 2024: Hong Kong launched the world's first spot Ether ETFs — three months ahead of the US — with in-kind subscription/redemption the US wouldn't offer. Product-wise, Hong Kong won. Then came day one: HK$87 million of turnover — orders of magnitude below America's bitcoin ETFs.
1. The product was genuinely ahead
- First spot-ETH ETFs anywhere — before the US approved its own
- In-kind creation: swap actual crypto for ETF units — the US only allowed cash creation initially
- Regulated retail access: the only fully regulated route for mainstream HK investors to hold crypto exposure
2. The demand-side triple squeeze
RegSir's take
A recurring Hong Kong pattern: world-class product, unreachable market. Same shape as the VATP exodus — build the regulation, then discover the client can't legally arrive. The honest lesson: product innovation can't substitute for market access. Until the connective channel exists (mainland capital, or an institutional reason to prefer HK venues), these ETFs will keep winning design awards and losing volume races. Product leadership matters — but market access is the constraint, and it lives outside the product's control.
3. Compliance takeaways
- Retail availability ≠ accessible market: licensed to sell ≠ anyone can buy — client-eligibility mapping should come before product design.
- ETF suitability still applies: crypto ETFs carry both market and asset-class risk — CoC suitability work doesn't stop at "it's regulated".
- Cross-border access is the variable: if Stock Connect ever opens to these products, the market transforms — watch the eligibility lists, not just the product shelf.
