The comparison table: 7 categories × exemption arrangements
| Who you are | What is exempted | Key conditions | Official guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returning professional (away < 3 years) | Full exemption from recognised industry qualification + local regulatory framework exams | Same regulated activity; prior role and qualification conditions met | Returning ↗ |
| Returning professional (away 3–8 years) | Conditional exemption | 5 CPT hours per RA per year, ≥50% on local regulatory knowledge. Example: returning after 4 years requires 20 CPT hours (≥10 local) before applying | Returning ↗ |
| Visiting professional | Two routes: short-term licensed representative or itinerant professional; exam/CPT waivers in some cases | Working for a licensed corporation on a short-term basis; IPO sponsor work requires LE Paper 16, Takeovers Code advice requires Paper 17 | Visiting ↗ |
| Overseas practitioner | "Work first, exam later" | Degree + sufficient relevant experience → may accept a condition to pass the local regulatory exam within 6 months of licensing; senior applicants may seek discretionary exemption | Overseas ↗ |
| Mainland practitioner | Mainland academic/professional qualifications, industry and management experience recognised; generally only the local regulatory framework exam is needed | Senior applicants may seek exemption or accept a 6-month post-licensing condition; experience must relate to the applied RA | Mainland ↗ |
| Family office | Single family office: generally no licence needed (not an exemption — simply out of scope) | Operated on a cost-recovery basis, not profit-seeking; multi-family offices run commercially are more likely to need a licence | Family ↗ |
| PE firm | Conditional exam exemptions for senior staff; "incidental exemption" for co-investment offers | Managing securities portfolios → Type 9; offering co-investment opportunities → generally Type 1, but if you already hold Type 9 managing the relevant fund, Type 1 may be unnecessary | PE ↗ |
| Hedge fund manager | Experienced investment professionals may request exam exemptions | Generally Type 9; wide experience recognition — research, prop trading, alternative strategies, local and overseas, including unregulated environments | Hedge ↗ |
Who should pay closest attention
Returning: the three-year line
Three years is the hard boundary — back within three years typically means a full exemption; between three and eight years means conditional exemption plus annual CPT. Beyond eight years this route closes, though seniority can still be argued case by case.
Visiting vs stationed: it turns on continuity
Short-term representative and itinerant professional routes are designed for brief assignments. If you are actually posted long-term, the ordinary representative route applies — picking the wrong route gets the application returned.
"No licence needed" ≠ "exam exemption"
A single family office needing no licence is out of regulatory scope; an exam exemption means "licence required, exam waived". Legally different — where in doubt, confirm the position with the SFC before filing.

FAQ
I left the Hong Kong industry five years ago — do I have to retake the exams?
Depends on the gap: within three years usually means a full exemption; three to eight years is conditional — prior-role and qualification conditions plus 5 CPT hours per RA per year (≥50% local regulatory knowledge).
Does a single family office need an SFC licence?
Generally no — a single family office run on a cost-recovery, non-profit basis is not carrying on a regulated-activity business. Multi-family offices are more likely to need one.
Relocating from an overseas office — can the exam be deferred?
With a degree plus sufficient relevant experience you may accept a condition to pass the local exam within 6 months of licensing — work first, exam after; senior applicants may seek discretionary exemption.
Are exemptions automatic?
No — all are granted by the SFC at its discretion. Request them in your WINGS application with supporting evidence.
